Bangladeshi filmmaker Ahmed Tahsin Shams’ film ‘Dehstation’ has been released on the international OTT platform Amazon Prime.
The film has been released for UK and US audiences since July. The filmmaker said that the film is going to be opened for the audience of Bangladesh within a few days.
The social negative genre film depicts the life struggles of a sex worker and her child and the consequences of their journey towards a better future in social reality.
Actress Moumita Mitra from Kolkata played the central role of the film. There are also Bangladesh Shahadat Hossain, late SM Mohsin, Hossain Mohammad Belal, Ahmed Rana, Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, Farhana Eva, Saikat Siddiqui and others.
Although not released in the theaters of the country, the song of the film has already been released on YouTube. Popular singers Fahmida Nabi, Tanzir Tuhin besides Shamayla Behroz Rahman, Nashin Sharmili have given voice to the songs used in the film. The music of the film is composed by Neil Kamrul.
Regarding the film, the producer Ahmed Tahsin Shams said, “The experimental film’s story-telling, characterization and actors’ dialogues have brought out the existential crisis of the character in a somewhat modern way. Its colors are black and white to show the sadness of the life of sex workers. In our domestic reality we did not think of showing it in theaters. So it was released on the international platform. Hopefully, the film will soon be enjoyed by the international film audience as well as the domestic audience.”
Actor Shahadat Hossain said, “My character in the film is a bit surreal. Because the character’s past, presence and all are unknown to the other characters. So this ‘stranger’ character will be a bit strange to the audience.”
Actress Moumita Mitra feels, “Her character is one where she is a loving mother, prostitute and elder sister at times. Each character was so unique that it was really challenging to portray that character believably.”
Producer Ahmed Tahsin Shams is Associate Professor of English at Notre Dame University, Bangladesh. Currently teaching at the University of Notre Dame in the United States. In 2011, his telefilm ‘Shooneyer Awarti’ (Sound of Silence) was released on Channel I. The film ‘Dehstation’ is his second production.
Tahsin said that the production of his next film ‘Arshinagar’ for an OTT platform has already been completed. He made the film based on Samuel Beckett’s famous novel ‘Waiting for Godot’. Popular actors Ahmed Rubel and Shahadat Hossain acted in it. The film is likely to release next year.
